Get more vitamins and minerals by eating oats

  • 2 min read

Oats are one of our most nutritious grains. Most people know that oats are high in fiber, but that is far from the only thing that makes oats a good choice.

In addition to fiber, oats contain a range of vitamins and minerals that the body needs every day. It is also a versatile food that is just as suitable for breakfast as it is for baking and cooking.

WHY OATS ARE GOOD FOR THE BODY

Oats contain seven of the eight B vitamins: thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, pyridoxine, biotin, and folate. B vitamins are important for the body's energy metabolism, nervous system, and blood formation.

In addition, oats contain vitamin K, which contributes to normal blood clotting and is important for bones. But what perhaps makes oats most interesting is their mineral content.

OATS ARE RICH IN IRON

Iron is needed, among other things, for oxygen transport in the blood. Since iron from plant-based foods is more difficult for the body to absorb than iron from animal-based foods, it can be smart to combine oats with something containing vitamin C, such as berries or fruit.

Teenage girls and women of childbearing age are the groups who most often have difficulty getting enough iron, making iron-rich foods extra important.

CONTAIN SEVERAL IMPORTANT MINERALS

Oats are also a source of:

  • Magnesium, which contributes to normal muscle function and is important for bones.
  • Zinc, which is needed for the immune system and the metabolism of nutrients.
  • Potassium, which helps regulate blood pressure and supports nerve and muscle function.
  • Phosphorus, which is important for both bones and energy production.

DON'T FORGET THE FIBER

One of oats' most well-known properties is their fiber content. Oats contain both insoluble fiber and the soluble fiber beta-glucan.

Beta-glucan from oats has documented health effects and can, among other things, contribute to lowering cholesterol levels when included as part of a varied diet and healthy lifestyle.

EASY WAYS TO EAT MORE OATS

It doesn't have to be complicated to incorporate more oats into your daily life.

  • Replace wheat flour in pancakes with oat flour or blended rolled oats.
  • Replace some of the flour in bread and pie crusts with oats.
  • Add rolled oats to smoothies.
  • Try oat rice as an alternative to regular rice.
  • Make your own snack balls or bars with oats as a base.
  • Start the day with porridge or overnight oats.

SUMMARY

Oats are much more than just a source of fiber. They contain several important vitamins and minerals, provide long-lasting satiety, and are easy to incorporate into daily life. No wonder oats have been a natural part of the Nordic diet for generations.
